AFCOM NorCal Lays the Foundation for Bridging the Communication Gap between IT and Facilities

San Francisco, CA – August 25, 2008- AFCOM Northern California recently held their first Chapter Meeting on June 5, 2008 at PG&E’s Pacific Energy Center in San Francisco, CA.  The meeting focused on “Data Center Management Convergence- Bridging the Gap between IT and Facilities.” Over 55 IT, Facilities, Data Center professionals and engineers involved with the design of mission critical facilities attended. The meeting was a half day event that started at 8:30 a.m. in the morning and ended at 1:30 p.m.

Jim Gammon welcomed everyone to the first official chapter meeting and discussed the chapter’s proposed mission, goals, and introduced the board member nominees. The meeting covered a wide range of Data Center issues such as energy efficiency, IT and facilities convergence, and data center management. Speakers at the event included Mark Bramfitt, Principal Program Manager for PG&E, who focused on Driving Data Center and IT Energy Efficiency. Presentations were also made by Andy Broer, Data Center Manager for Cisco Network Systems, and Kevin Barney, Data Center Manager for UCSF.  Both presenters shared their experiences with managing the whole data center eco-system and the importance of creating a partnership between IT Managers, Facilities Managers, and Data Center Operations.

There was also a panel discussion that included Silicon Valley’s top technology leaders from Symantec, Cisco, Sun Microsystems, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, and Tivo. Participants gave their viewpoints on the emerging roles of IT and Facilities in the modern Data Center. The panel discussion was moderated by Bob Brown, CEO of TELADATA.

Attendees had the opportunity to network with their peers, share best practices, and gain insight from industry experts on current data center issues and solutions. Some of the common feedback from the first chapter meeting was that “It is a great start to what I know will be a long term success.”
